live look of san jose. the entire city celebrating the g-men on the road to advance in the postseason. we'll tell you all about that coming up on this friday, yes, friday, october 12th. this is "today in the bay." good friday morning, everybody. 5:00 straight up. thank you for joining us, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. we will talk about the vice presidential debate in just a little bit. >> first off, we are following breaking news out of san jose. an early morning house fire sends two people to the hospital. that two-alarm blaze broke out at a house on carlton avenue. that is near union avenue and close to los gatos memorial park. that is where bob redell is live right now. he has just arrived on the scene. bob, what's the latest? what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. the married couple that lives in

this home is in the hospital being treated for burns. they were walking and talking, indicating to the fire department that their injuries are not life-threatening. you can see this fire is still not out. it's been burning for an hour. every time there seems to be a knockdown, you have this happening where another part of the house starts to flare back up. part of the challenge for the firefighters, there's two. one, there's live ammunition inside so they have had to keep their distance because that stuff obviously can explode. it's more of an eye issue, not necessarily a bullet firing from a gun but a popping like a large firecracker. that ladder has been trying to angle its water past these power lines. of course it can't shoot into the power lines so that's also an issue. the past few moments pg&e climbed that pole and might have disabled those lines which might
5:02 am
indicate they might get a better attack on this fire. for the most part because of the live ammo, the fire department has been assuming a defensive posture. they told us at one point this house is on the verge of collapse. there's a vehicle in the back that was on fire. apparently atoerdiccording to a neighbor the fire started ot right side of the house and swept to the left side. it's not clear what started this fire. another issue is keeping this fire from spreading. it did start to burn towards the house on the right and house on the back but by all indications, it looks like they have been very successful in keeping it contained to just this one location. again, it's a two-alarm fire at this house on carlton avenue. the man and wife who live here are in the hospital but their injuries are not life-threatening. bob redell, "today in the bay." more breaking news that we're following, also in san jose, where a night out turned deadly. police say a man was shot and killed on rogers avenue near the

suspect, possibly more, took off. they're not saying yet if the shooter was on foot or in a car. i do have calls in to san jose police. as soon as i hear from them, i'll let you know what they had to say. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." a follow-up to a story we've been closely covering all week. the couple found driving the car of a woman murdered in hercules are both being held in washington state where they were arrested earlier. darnell recently escaped from a southern california prison. the couple was driving a car that belonged to susie ko, a hercules teacher who was found dead inside of her home. investigators are still trying to figure out how the couple got the clear. it is not clear whether the washington will be charged with ko's murder. the ex-marine accused of killing his two neighbors during an argument in vallejo last week is expected in court today.

65-year-old martin honiger is scheduled to be arraigned in fairyfield this afternoon. police believe he shot and killed two neighbors during a political argument the same day as last week's presidential debate. he hid in his home for an hour before police were able to find and arrest him. a vice mayor has been convicted of stealing money from an insurance client on the peninsula. joe medrano found guilty yesterday. prosecutors say medrano acted as an insurance broker and collected a $159,000 premium but never forwarded that payment to his parent company. medranno is running from clayton city council. if he is re-elected, the council could decide to challenge whether he is fit for office and have him removed. medrano will have his sentencing in court in december. meteorologist christina loren joining us now. she is talking about what i

claira university. thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you, marla. >> if joe biden and paul ripe we were in your class which grade would you give them? >> i'd give them both a b plus. i think they both did a pretty strong job for their campaign's platform. stylewise, they both made some mistakes. joe biden was quite aggressive, perhaps to some people too aggressive. some of the commentary this morning indicates that he may have been seen as being rude at times. on the other hand, i think paul ryan probably needed to take control a little more of his speaking time and also get his points across without being interrupted. >> and did this debate really in your opinion do anything to sway voters? >> doubtful, doubtful. i would say if you're a committed democrat voter, you enjoyed the fiesty antics of biden. if you're a committed republican voter you thought ryan looked sort of presidential and at least didn't make any major
5:13 am
gaffes so i doubt it changed anybody's mind. >> in terms of debate etiquette, i noticed there was a lot of interruptions on both sides from biden and from ryan. how do you think that fared with voters? >> yeah, if i were the coach of either candidate, i would have said don't interrupt each other while they're speaking. don't roll your eyes, don't smirk, don't laugh. but unfortunately these kind of debates are not sort of the typical academic debates that we coaches work with. so the campaign clearly told joe and paul to take the gloves off and have a fiesty little round and entertain the people who are going to vote for them anyhow. really i doubt if it changed anybody's minds in the middle. >> my last question for you, professor, what about the moderator? that role is very important in the debate. what did you think of her? >> i thought martha raddatz did a terrific job.
5:14 am
she was much more aggressive in her questioning and tried getting the candidates to really clarify what they were talking about and to be specific, which in the first debate i think things did get out of control. but in this debate martha raddatz i thought was definitely on top of what was going on. >> i happen to agree with you. all right, professor, thanks again for your time. both energizing their bases. but here's a little something we've never said about a debate before. while biden and ryan were arguing, the presidency was busy retweeting. >> retweeting. that's republishing others comments on twitter. the president did it last night while watching the debates. now, a retweet from the president is a pretty big endorsement. among the comments he retweeted, a blog called up worthy, which commented on moderator martha raddatz tough question. you recall she said do you actually have the specifics or are you still working on it and

5:18 am
well, we've got a cold front on the way. it's taking its time and will move towards us over the course of the next 48 hours. that will bring a much drier and clearer pattern and you'll get more sunshine today than you did yesterday. i bumped your numbers up by one or two degrees. gilroy 67 degrees, livermore about 71 degrees, 67 degrees in fremont and the east shore staying nice and cool. our oakland a's, unfortunately guys you didn't make it but we've got your back for next season and you sure did give it your hearts. giants are still in it to win it. of course we are the proud broadcast home of the san francisco giants so we'll have all the action right here on nbc bay area as we head through the next couple weeks. boy, oh boy, is it getting exciting. saturday into sunday temperatures start to warm up. we'll be close to 90 degrees by wednesday, so you'll be able to pull out that summer wardrobe at least for a couple days. then toward the end of next week we get another area of low pressure so we'll talk about more showers. things will continue to change as they always do on the

5:32 am
you know, obviously sounded pretty freaked out. and at that point it was just a matter of getting over here and seeing if we could help out. >> reporter: a neighbor says they heard some popping sounds around quarter to 4:00 this morning. when they came out to see what happens going on, a short time after they saw the smoke and the fire. according to the brother-in-law, it appears this might have started in the kitchen. that's his take from talking to his relative, so the fire department, they have an arson investigator inside trying to figure out if that is in fact the case. a couple of challenges in fighting this fire, there was live ammunition inside that the man who lives here notified the fire department about, so the firefighters had to actually keep their distance. if you're to look up, they did have a hose that was squirting water on the fire but their angle was obstructed because of those power lines. that also made it very difficult. so basically during this firefight, san jose's fire department had to assume a defensive posture.

voters and they started throwing punches from the start of this debate and intensity, that energy lasted for the full 90 minutes. oftentimes they were interrupting each other during the discussion. they were very pointed in their points with each other. and really called out the top of the ticket on either side. this was something that both men came into looking to accomplish different goals. and while the analysts will debate over who won and you always have a split on who won a debate, there's no way to really determine that, what they will say is vice president biden came in needing to up that energy that we talked about, needing to really recover after what many analysts called a lackluster, disengaged debate by president obama in the first presidential debate. and then you had paul ryan, who didn't want to dampen any of the enthusiasm, the romney ticket really see a bounce coming out of that first debate. they wanted to keep that

momentum rolling. and the first blush this morning as the dust has settled, it looks like most of the pundits agree each of the men accomplished at least part of those goals. >> all right. jay gray, appreciate the update. the presidential one happens on tuesday. thank you very much. now for a look at what this debate means for the election, we are joined by a professor at santa clara university who teaches debate. thanks for your time. >> thank you, marla. >> we spoke to you a little earlier and you gave each candidate, joe biden and paul ryan, a b plus in terms of their performance. joe biden came out a lot differently than president obama did in the presidential debate last week. do you think that this is a new tone for the campaign? >> absolutely. i think president obama is going to try and build on the energy and aggressiveness that joe biden showed last night. obviously being the president, he can't do some of the things that joe biden did in terms of interruptions and laughing and rolling his eyes, but certainly
5:45 am
he can be more aggressive, he he can actually be much more aggressive in trying to pin down governor romney in terms of details, like the tax plan, social security. and that's what he's going to try to do in this next debate. >> looking ahead, what do the president and mitt romney need to do respectively to get that edge? >> governor romney is going to repeat the mantra of jobs, jobs, jobs. that's clearly the republican campaign's key issue. he's also going to have to try and look like a concerned, involved leader. not an elitist, not someone who's a millionaire, distanced from the average man. i think as i mentioned, president obama will try to be more aggressive. i think president obama is going to try to explain that he inherited a mess, that he's done the best job he can and he deserves another chance. >> certainly we will see what happens on tuesday, the next
